The very severe cyclonic storm Phailin seem to have come as a big relief for the Congress high command, which has been waiting for an opportunity to break the long-drawn strike by the government employees against Telangana state formation.
The Centre brought pressure on the State government to take steps for the ending of Seemandhra employees’ strike.
First, it was the electricity employees who called off their strike on the plea that they did not want to put the people into further trouble at a time when the cyclone was threatening to unleash its fury in the coastal belt.
Then teachers too called off their two-month long agitation. Even the firm and vociferous Secretariat employees from the Seemandhra region withdrew their strike.
And most importantly, the APSRTC employees, too, called off their agitation on the pretext of cyclone.
The two-month long strike by the government employees has turned the agitation for Samaikyandhra has turned into an unprecedented mass movement.
In fact the strike by the RTC employees and especially by the electricity staff had virtually forced the powers that be at Hyderabad and New Delhi to see the looming threat of Congress being washed away in the Samaikya tidal wave if not checked in time.
Even as the central leaders were trying to find a way out to wriggle out of the situation to enable it to go ahead with the formation of Telangana State, the threat of a super cyclone Phailin was sounded by the concerned authorities. This seemed to have come in handy for the central leaders who were trying to script a game plan for speeding the process Telangana formation.
